Google Search helps to follow World Cup matches

To help people follow the World Cup matches in real time and see highlights on their phones, Google Search has rolled out new features designed to treat football fans around the world to a “new immersive experience” that includes group tables, statistics and trending players.

“Looking forward to the updated Search experience for soccer, just in time for the World Cup,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai tweeted late on Friday.

Google said Search will show video recaps from select broadcasters featuring goals and highlights of major match moments within 30 minutes of the end of each game.

“For each match, you can tap to watch live or follow along with score updates on your phone. You’ll also find a detailed timeline with updates including in-game moments, live images, stats, tweets and more,” Yoav Schwartzberg, Product Manager for Google Search said in a blog post.

“To keep track of all the matches, even when you’re not searching, you can pin real-time scores on your Android phone screen from Search on mobile browsers or from the Android Google App. Find the match you’re looking for, tap and drag to pin the match anywhere on your screen,” Schwartzberg added.

Google has also created a World Cup Tracker on Google News app on Android.

“The tracker will include a special ‘spotlight’ feature that provides an easy way to visualise live scores, highlights, results, and schedules all in one place,” Schwartzberg said.Google-logo-2015-G-icon

Mastercard ends meals-for-goals campaign with Neymar, Messi

Brazil`s Neymar during friendly soccer match against Croatia at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England, on 3 June 2018 and Argentina`s Lionel Messi during a team training session at Sports Centre FC Barcelona Joan Gamper, in Sant Joan Despi, Spain, on 1 June 2018. Photo: APMastercard on Monday said it was changing a campaign in which thousands of free meals were to be given to the needy every time football superstars Neymar and Messi scored goals.

Under the scheme, every time the Brazil and Argentina strikers scored, 10,000 meals would be donated to the United Nations World Food Programme.

The idea, due to run until March 2020, drew fire from many on social media who said it was in poor taste. Brazilian national team coach Tite also criticised it as counterproductive because it put too much pressure on individual stars.

The credit card giant, which sponsors both players and the Brazilian Football Confederation, says that instead a million meals will be donated in 2018, regardless of the goals scored. That is in addition to 400,000 meals already donated.

“We don’t want the fans, players or anyone else to lose focus of the crucial question of hunger and our efforts to help this cause,” Mastercard said in a statement in Brazil.

On-pitch rivals Neymar and Messi will continue to cooperate for the campaign, the company said.

On Saturday, Tite had addressed Mastercard directly, saying that one or two players should not shoulder the burden of generating the meals.

“This is a very good gesture…, but it would be even bigger if the donation was made every time a goal was scored by all the athletes from Brazil and Argentina, because we play as a team,” he said, following Brazil’s pre-World Cup warm-up game against Croatia in Liverpool.

‘De Villiers retirement a blow to World Cup bid’

In this file photo taken on March 10, 2018 South Africa batsman AB de Villiers plays a shot during day two of the second Test against Australia at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. AFPCoach Ottis Gibson admitted on Monday that the retirement from international cricket of AB de Villiers was a blow to South Africa’s hopes of winning the Cricket World Cup next year.

Gibson revealed that he had spoken to De Villiers the day before last week’s announcement by the star batsman but had been unable to convince him to change his mind.

“We had a conversation,” said Gibson, who was briefing journalists ahead of the South African squad getting together to undergo their annual fitness and medical assessments.

“He called me the morning before he made the announcement,” said Gibson. “We had a long conversation around whether he was making the right decision. He reckons he is. He has spoken to the people in his close circle.”

Gibson said De Villiers’ decision had been a shock to him. “He is one of the best players in the world. He could have made a huge difference in the World Cup and he knows that… he’s chosen to walk away from the game at this time and it is what it is.”

Gibson said the World Cup in England and Wales in June 2019 was still a year away. “We’ll have to alter our plans obviously but it gives us enough time to do that.”

De Villiers, 34, announced his retirement last Wednesday, saying he was “tired” after a 14-year international career during which he was hailed as one of the best players in the game. He said it had been a tough decision but that “I would like to retire while still playing decent cricket”.

“It’s disappointing for the country and world cricket that AB de Villiers is”t playing cricket anymore,” said Gibson

Unusual heat may continue till Tuesday

Photo : BSSBangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) marked the present weather condition as unusual heat and predicts that it might continue till Tuesday as the country could see rains accompanied by thunder storms.

Ruhul Quddus , a meteorologist of BMD, said on Monday that there is no forecast of heat wave to sweep over the country soon as overall temperature of the country is still below 36 degrees Celsius.

“Although the city people are witnessing a bizarre weather with an unusual heat, but it could not be treated as a heat wave. If mercury level continues above 36 degrees Celsius for at least two days then it can be treated as heat wave,” he said.

“Mercury level is persisting above 36 degrees Celsius only at Jashore while it is under 36 degrees Celsius all over the country, including the capital city,” Quddus said, adding that the weather may cool down soon as rain is likely to occur over the capital and its adjoining areas from Tuesday.

Weather may remain mainly dry over the country having chance of rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind and lightning flashes at a few places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Dhaka Chattogram divisions in 24 hours as of 9 am Tuesday, said a met office press release.

Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country, during the period.

“A low pressure has formed over East Central Bay and adjoining area,”  the release said.

It added that trough of Westerly low lies over West Bengal extending to Northeast Bay across Bangladesh.

Besides, a weather warning message said rain or thundershowers accompanied temporary westerly or northeasterly gusty or squally wind speeding 45-60 kph is likely to occur over the regions of Mymensingh and Sylhet wherein river ports shall hoist cautionary signal number one till 6 pm today.

The maximum temperature was recorded 36.6 degrees Celsius yesterday at Jashore in Khulna division and today’s minimum temperature 20.5 degrees Celsius in Rangpur.
